  1. Multiply the latitude difference by 111km.

(1° of latitude is approximately 111km on land)

 

Example 1:

Calculate the distance between South Africa (30°S) and Spain (40°N).

 

Solution:

  1. Latitude difference = 30°S + 40°N = 70°

(Since 1° = 111km)

  1. Distance = 111km × 70 = 7,770km

The distance between South Africa and Spain is 7,770km.

 

Calculation of Local Time Using Lines of Longitude:

Procedure:

 

  1. Identify the locations involved.
  2. Find the difference in longitude.
  3. Convert the longitude difference to time.
  4. Adjust the time based on the direction of movement (west or east).

 

Example:

If the time at Town A (long. 75°W) is 5:00 pm on Friday, what will be the time and day at Town B (long. 120°E)?

 

Solution:

  1. Longitude difference = 75°W + 120°E = 195°
  2. Conversion to time = 195 (since 15° = 1hr) = 13hrs (15)
  3. Adjustment of time according to the direction of movement = 5:00 pm + 13hrs (add, since it is due east) = 6:00 am on Saturday.
